This Festival was established in Trento in 1952 as a project of the City of Trento and the Italian Alpine Club (later joined by the City of Bolzano in 1998).

It is the world’s oldest mountain climbing and adventure film festival. The directors who compete for the “Cittą di Trento” Grand Prize come from all over the world. There are several awards, the Golden Gentian for best film, the Golden Gentian given by the Italian Alpine Club for the best mountaineering documentary, along with other prestigious awards. Witness to the progress of the alpine techniques and philosophy, this Festival also publicises problems concerning the mountains.

This event is also an opportunity for international meetings and discussions, exhibitions and celebrations dedicated to mountains and mountaineering. The “Cittą di Trento” International Filmfestival, a historic meeting place of the most authentic mountain traditions, promotes knowledge, appreciation and respect for all mountain areas and the cultures of their inhabitants.
