The Kendal Mountain Film Festival is
an independent Festival founded by John Porter and Brian Hall in 1980. Like many Mountain
Festivals it is held in a relatively small mountain town. Kendal is on the edge of the
English Lake District, and is an excellent base for the Festival.
The two main venues are the 1000 capacity
Leisure Centre, and the 950 capacity Brewery Arts Centre. With the use of other venues in
town, we have up to five separate cinemas and lecture halls running at any one time. From
2001, Berghaus will be the presenting sponsor for the Festival.
Three successful Festivals were in 1981,
1983 and 1985 and the organisation was strengthened by the involvement of Jim Curran and
other leading UK climbers and activists. For the next 14 years climbing took precedence
over the Festival. Pressure from the climbing community led to the re-establishment of the
Festival in 1999, and it is now run on an annual basis. The Kendal Festival is unique in
Britain, and is rapidly growing and expending its activities. It is a showcase for young
climbers and film makers, painters and photographers.
