Anton, a mountain man, leaves his native land attracted by the American dream. New York, his new surroundings are hostile. His grows depressed. His world is in Baviera, with his home, his mountains and his girl friend. Urged on by his homesickness, he goes back home. This is TrenkerÌs most significant film, with several neorealistic sequences, about Heimat, desertion and returning home.
DIRECTOR
Luis Trenker (1892-1990), South-Tyrolese, is one of the most well known directors of mountain films. Alpinist, architect, violinist, actor, director, scriptwriter, writer, Luis became an important figure in 1930s cinema.
He worked with Arnold Fanck and Leni Riefenstahl.
The National Mountain Museum is organising a film exhibition of Luis TrenkerÌs production called ÏLuis Trenker, il mito della montagna in celluloideÓ, showing in December 2000.
