American bluesman Paul Pena discovered, listening to Radio Moscow fifteen years ago, a way of using the voice he had never heard before. It was a vocal and multi-harmonic song tradition, used in the Tuva region between Siberia and Mongolia, a region closed off to any external influence, a kind of enclave that has maintained its traditions without any contamination. Pena began reproducing that music in his singing and after many years made contact with Tuva musicians who came to the US for a musical tour. This film, candidate for the Oscar 2000 as best documentary and for a prize at Sundance, tells the story of two cultures geographically and historically distant from each other, that meet and weave strong links through music.
DIRECTORS
This is Roko and AdrianÌs first feature film. Interested in everything that happens all over the world because of TV programmes and journeys abroad, they were both influenced by the film ÏStar WarsÓ. Together with some friends, they began film making very young. They both graduated from the University of Southern California. Genghis Blues is their first professional effort.
