RAI VD'A: 25 ANNI PER LA MONTAGNA
Mountain Film Retrospective by RAIVd'A

The Cervino International Film festival has slowly made itself known in the past years in the panorama of mountain film festivals and it has been marked by its new formula which has made it become an original point of reference. The presentation of the prize-winning films from the various festivals enables it to have a panoramic view, at both a national and international level, of mountain cinematographic productions.

For 25 years, the television programming of 'Rai Sede Regionale per la Valle d'Aosta' has developed the theme of mountains; in fact, it started the activity in the alpine region in December 1979.

And therefore, it is with pleasure that we participate in the seventh edition of the Cervino International Film Festival where we will present a retrospective of our film and documentary productions which have also echoed across regional boundaries, with recommendations and acknowledgements within the film review sector.

During the four evenings: "souvenirs", "exploits", "non solo Alpi" and "storia", a selection of films will be presented starting from 1986 with "Quei giorni sul Bianco" by Nazareno Marinoni which commemorates the birth of mountaineering and concluding with "Una ciliegina sulla torta" by Giorgio Squarzino, finishing with a climb of the Peuterey Integral in 24 hours, produced in 2000 and paying homage to Cervinia, one of the most renowned winter resorts and truly a "pearl of the Alps", with vintage images, and collected stories and testimonies by Carlo Rossi.

Wednesday 21 July: "Memories"

Quando Cervinia non c'era
Carlo A. Rossi, 1993, 28'32"

The birth and development of one of the most known alpine winter resorts, through the memories and testimonies of the late Federico Mariani and Vanna Piga Bich with the aid of precious and unedited archive material.

Valtournenche d'atre cou
Carlo A. Rossi, 1994, 31'31"

A short film composed of a constructed text with crossing testimonies of six "votornèn" who speak about their experiences and memories of life in the '30s in Valtournenche. Among the precious images of these years, there are also clips of two films shot on location: "La donna della montagna" and "La dama bianca".

C'era una volta il KL
Carlo A. Rossi, 1990, 26'39"

During the '60s and '70s Breuil Cervinia became famous above all for the "KL" competition, the flying start kilometre, a discipline that could be said to have been born on the slopes of Piccolo Cervino on Plateau Rosa. With the participation of Giuseppe Lamberti and a screenplay by Luigi Castellarin, the short film narrates the story of "KL" at the end of 1978, when the racing slopes were sacrificed for summer skiing.

Un bel 13!
Giorgio Squarzino, 2001, 40'00"

The 13th edition of the Mezzalama trophy for ski mountaineering from Breuil-Cervinia to Gressoney, screened with images and a commentary by Carlo Gobbo and Abele Blanc.

Thursday 22 July: "Exploits"

La Pertze
Giorgio Squarzino, 1991, 25'12"

A historical reconstruction of the first ascent of Père Eternel, a monolith in the Mont Blanc range, judged by the famous guides in those days as "inaccessible".

Una ciliegina sulla torta
Giorgio Squarzino, 2000, 32'52"

On the occasion of the 150th celebration of the Courmayeur Società delle Guide, Courmayeur's guide Arnaud Clavel and the aspiring guide Matteo Pellin set off to cover the Peuterey Integral on Mont Blanc, in 24 hours.

Come esempio lo stambecco
Carlo A. Rossi, 1991, 29'07"

The life, reality and enterprises of Valerio Bertoglio, ex-marathon runner from Torino, alpine guide and ranger of the Gran Paradiso National Park in Valsavarenche, who was also one of the inventors of the so called "athletic mountaineering".

Ettore e Bruno, storie di pietre e di corsa
Carlo A. Rossi, 1997, 29'15"

They are called sky runners who love mountains and racing... Bruno Brunod holds the record of ascent and descent of Matterhorn, Ettore Champrétavy is one of the greatest exponents of this sporting discipline. Bruno is a mason who constructs stonewalls; Ettore's trade is constructing slate roofs. Racing and stones are the two elements that unite these two from the Valle d'Aosta.

Friday 23 July: "Not Only Alpes"

Les parois de la mémoire: K2
Carlo A. Rossi, 1995, 56'32"

Erich Abram, one of the protagonists of the victorious, Italian expedition to K2 in 1954, returns after 40 years to the place where this historical achievement took place. Old films together with the testimonies of the other protagonists complete the structure of this documentary carried out in collaboration with Jérome Equer and with the counsel of Roberto Mantovani.

Scelte di vita
Giorgio Squarzino, 2000, 52'22"

The search in Patagonia and Terra del Fuoco for the evidence on Father Alberto Maria de Agostini, a missionary from Biella and a great connoisseur of Valtournenche who aided to popularising the beauty of South America through his images.

Saturday 24 July: "The History"

Nel regno del Cervino
Stefano Viaggio, 1995, 50'54"

The documentary goes back to the most important phases of Matterhorn's conquest and at the same time analyses some aspects of the artistic and literary images that this pyramid shaped mountain evoked during the second half of the nineteenth century.

The birth of mountaineering and the Società delle Guide is told with the researched reconstruction of one of the all-Italian ascents to the peak of Mont Blanc.

Oltre da solo: Renato Casarotto
Nazareno Marinoni, 1987, 29'44"

A passionate tribute to Renato Casarotto; to his feats, his simplicity and his great mountaineering skills, until his tragic disappearance on K2.
