Peter Leichti decided to give up smoking and in order to
smother his nicotine cravings, he started to make long excursions to the mountains with a
video camera. After three vain attempts and three excursions, Peter accumulated around one
hundred hours of filmed footage and a ninety page diary, which gave life to a road-movie
crossing his homeland, Switzerland. The film unites his love for his homeland with a
reflection on the importance of travelling.
DIRECTOR
Peter Leichti was born in 1951 in San Gallo. He studied the history of art at Zurich
university and received a diploma in design at the Academy of Arts. He has worked as a
freelance script-writer, director and operator since 1986. An experimental director, his
first attempts are documentaries: and the 1991 video with Nan June Paik, "A Hole in
the Hat". The documentary "Grimsel" won the jury award at the Festival
Cinema Giovani in Turin in 1990, while his first feature film "Martha's Garden"
was produced in 1997. "Hans im Glueck" has been nominated for the Joris Ivens
Award. His latest documentary "Namibia Crossings" is a film following the same
travel theme.
