Every year thousands of Sub-Saharans, but also Moroccan and Algerian nationals, attempt to gain entry into Europe, illegally embarking on rickety boats and crossing the Mediterranean to arrive in Spain. Chaabi's documentary demonstrates the difficulties migrants face when forced to leave their native land due to poverty and lack of employment. The illegal passage is notoriously marked by great peril: the dangers of the desert, police ambush, and the boats that manage to arrive on shore, with their human traffic, are so unsafe that they have been labelled "the boats of death".

DIRECTOR
Mustapha Chaabi is a documentary-film maker credited with: "Le barques de la nuit" (1996), "Le marche de kife" (2001), "Contrebande des pauvres" (2001) and "Hachiche" (2003).
