2002: a group of seven Swiss-Italian mountaineers set
out, in celebration of the International Year of Mountains, to climb G4, a mountain
reaching almost eight thousand metres situated in the Karakorum mountain range and defined
as "One of the most difficult mountains in the world" by mountaineer and writer
Kurt Diemberger. G4, an abbreviation of Gasherbrum 4, is situated between the Chinese,
Pakistan and Indian borders, and has always been a battle zone between the latter two. The
initial plan was to carry out an expedition and film a documentary tracing the footsteps
of the original climb in 1958 by the mountaineers Walter Bonatti, Carlo Mauri and Fosco
Maraini. In reality, the expedition found themselves climbing G4 during a period of
inflamed conflict between Pakistan and India. The documentary weaves between the 1958
images and those filmed in 2002, including interviews on Bonatti and Mauris' expedition.
DIRECTORS
Fulvio Mariani was born in 1958, started his career working as a cameraman for RTSI and
has made numerous documentaries on mountaineering, exploration and adventure. He took part
in the expedition to the north face of Everest in 1983 and two years later followed the
solitary ascent of Cerro Torre by Marco Pedrini, documented in "Cumbre", winning
many awards. Thanks to this achievement, Mariani began to work alone, specialising in
adventure films. He has taken part in many expeditions with some of the greatest
mountaineers in the world. He made "200 metri al 21ˇ secolo" with Reinhold
Messner on the southern face of Lhotse, and was responsible for both the cinematography of
"Grido di Pietra" by Werner Herzog and the television series
"Overland". Moreover, he has made "Los Cueveros, I signori
dell'oscuritŕ", a documentary on speleology in Cuba, and "Montagne
liquefatte", with Mario Casella. He has also participated in the Cervino
International Film Festival with "Dolomiti di Pietro" and "I cavalieri
delle vertigini".
Mario Casella was born in 1958, graduated in Arts and
became an alpine guide in 1985. He is a journalist for RTSI and co-producer of the RTSI's
magazine "Fal". Casella is no longer an alpine guide, but has taken part
in non-European expeditions over the years.
