RESTORATION
OF TRA I FIGLI DEL CIELO (3rd and 4th part), Venanzio
Sella, 1925, 30', 35mm
Restoration of the third and forth part of documentary Tra i figli
del cielo, directed by Venanzio Sella. Descendant of Sella' s
contractors and bankers big family, Venanzio Sella (1900-1990),
councilor and vice president of Banca Sella, member of Accademia
di Agricoltura of Turin, commendatore of Ordine dei Santi Maurizio
e Lazzaro, expert of history and tradtions of the area around
the city of Biella, went to China in 1925 in a particular period
of political and social transition. In this curious and rich of
houmor documentary he offers a sensitive testimony of historical
and anthropological interest. Very spectacular images: from the
Sky Temple to the Big Walll ones. National première of the restored
print. The restoration has been carried out by the Turin Museo
Nazionale del Cinema.
The
entire restoration of Venanzio Sella's documentary Tra i figli
del cielo started in Spring 2000 with the recovery of the
first and the second part and finished, after finding the third
and forth part, in Summer 2002. The four original rolls in flammable
35mm are long respectively meters 467, 429, 466 and 408 and were
found in good state of conservation with few signs of wear. But
the support was rather dry and with a shrinking of 3% . In the
laboratory Mr.Bruno Favro has worked to obtain a new positive
copy on not flammable polyester support. At the beginning the
original copy has been washed with a solvent to remove the dirty
parts; then, using a "step one" optical printing press, it has
been obtained a low-contrast negative contra-type with the technic
of under liquid printing permitting the elimination of the lines
presented on the support. After the negative exposure it has been
obtained the final print on positive polyester support. The new
print has been outpoured with digital telecinema on video BetaSp
support.
