In
the history of mountain climbing women are almost invisible, their
names are unknown, their achievements often forgotten. Nevertheless,
women have written alpine history. This film tries to turn a spotlight
on women climbing and their courageous efforts. Which role did
and do women play? What pushed and push them to climb mountains?
Answers are different, individual and linked to past and present
times, but also to the different personality of every single woman.
The film traces a line from the first women who reached the top
of Mont Blanc, to their later resolution to confront the challenges
of mountain climbing, past and present. Other themes are the professionalization
of climbing by mountain guides and professional climbers, women
participating in high altitude expeditions and the philosophical
and psychological approach to climbing.
DIRECTOR
Ingrid Runggaldier was born in Bolzano in 1963. Daughter
of climbers, she studied Foreign Languages and Literatures at
Innsbruck University. She teached English at Italian secondary
and high school and translated some publications from English
to Ladin. She has also realized several radio programs and TV
reportages.
