"Afghanistan,
a country far away, at war. In a modern world's tumult of pictures
and sounds, does pointing a camera still mean anything? When I
began this film, sixteen years ago, I didn't ask to myself that
question. I was going to meet remarkable men like Commander Massoud,
not some junk heroes nor some kind of marketed products they manufacture
so many of for us these days. I have put together what remains
of this extraordinary adventure in order to resist all the deceptions
which sourround us…and for something more precious still with
which I am going to entrust you…" First words of this film
begun in 1981 in the secrecy of the Afghan war. There I tell the
story of two lonilesses and two struggles: the one of Massoud
chief of war and my own, that which belongs to one who films and
who questions himself. Bearing witness? Yes, but in which desert?
And why? The answer in 89 minutes.
